What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops in the sac (the mesothelium) that lines the body's internal cavity. Mesothelioma can develop in the lining surrounding the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), the abdominal cavity (peritoneal mesothelioma), the heart (pericardial mesothelioma), and, in some rare cases, the testicles (testicular mesothelioma).

Exposure to asbestos is believed to be the sole cause of mesothelioma. Once tiny asbestos particles are inhaled or ingested, the asbestos fibers attach to the layers of tissue — usually the tissue lining the lungs. Asbestos fibers remain lodged in the tissue, causing agitation and scarring. This agitation causes abnormal cell division and growth that causes tumors to develop.

Both malignant (cancerous) and benign (non-cancerous) types of mesothelioma can cause the cell tissue to thicken and collect fluid — ultimately constricting the organ the tissue encompasses. The majority of people suffering from mesothelioma — individuals suffering from pleural mesothelioma — experience shortness of breath and other significant problems associated with the rapidly decreasing lung capacity.
