Understanding the Types of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops when inhaled asbestos fibers become imbedded in the lining surrounding the body's vital organs. Inhaled asbestos fibers never leave the body. Once imbedded in the lining of the lung tissue or other vital organ, the fibers penetrate the body's natural defenses and tumors can form. Mesothelioma can involve the lining of the chest/lungs, abdominal cavity or heart.

  • Pleural Mesothelioma: When asbestos fibers attach to the tissue lining the lungs (the pleura or the pleura membrane), over time, a cancerous tumor can develop. The cancerous tumor causes the thickening of the tissue lining the lung and causes fluid to build up and place pressure on the lung cavity. This significantly impairs normal lung function. Pleural mesothelioma is the most commonly diagnosed type of mesothelioma cancer.
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers become imbedded between the layers lining the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) and cause a tumor or number of tumors to develop. As with other asbestos cancers, the cancerous tumors cause abnormal cell growth, resulting in thickening of the lining and increase of fluid buildup between the layers surrounding the abdominal cavity. Over time, the pressure placed on organs within the abdominal cavity restricts normal function of these organs.
  • Pericardial Mesothelioma: Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma cancer and occurs when asbestos fibers become imbedded in the tissue surrounding the heart (the pericardium) and cause a tumor to develop. Thickening of the tissue along with the fluid buildup between the tissue layers cause pressure that restricts normal function of the heart.
  • Benign Mesothelioma: Not all tumors detected in the cell tissue surrounding the body's vital organs are cancerous. Asbestos particles that become lodged in the cell tissue can cause cell growth or cell division, which can develop into a cancerous tumor (a malignant tumor) or a noncancerous tumor (benign tumor). While benign mesothelioma is not cancerous, it can still cause serious health risks, such as seizures or coma, if the disease continues undetected. When detected, benign mesothelioma can usually be treated through the surgical removal of the tumor.
