Texting While Driving in Texas

What is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is any form of driving that's done without one's full attention. The most notorious form of distracted driving is texting. There are other forms of distracted driving, including eating, putting on makeup, fiddling with the radio, and carrying on conversations with passengers, but texting while driving has gotten the most attention in recent years.

The Dangers of Texting While Driving

At 55 miles per hour, a driver takes his or her eyes off the road for the length of an entire football field while sending or reading a text. Excluding some local cities that have passed distracted driving laws (including Dallas) there is no widespread ban in Texas.

In 2011, Gov. Rick Perry vetoed what would have been Texas's first statewide ban on texting while driving, despite the well-documented dangers. Perry claimed that a ban would "micromanage" adult drivers' behavior.

Nonetheless, this doesn't mean you can't hold a texting driver responsible for causing a car wreck - bad driving is bad driving.
